Spyro Reignited Trilogy - San Diego Comic Con Booth

From the San Diego Comic Con 2018 panel on the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, we are given new information and details about the game's development.

  • After Insomniac’s first game flopped, they wanted to break into the family market that nintendo had a lock on one of the creative artists always wanted to make a game about dragons, and it went on from there.
  • High to low detail texture transitions, character expressions in simplistic graphics.
  • They wanted a five-letter name that would be effective and stick, looked to japanese words for inspiration and led to Spyro.
  • Bringing Spyro today: While they had lots of assets from the original games, they didn’t have the model, so they had to redesign and modernize him. The expressions were critical, as Toys For Bob worked closely with Insomniac.
  • Insomniac used green graph paper and mechanical pencils to sketched out levels that get scanned in and rendered, each level was around 6,000 polygons. World design was a very collaborative and creative process, no technicalities but they made it work. Insomniac wanted to think outside of “point A to point B”, exploring new worlds and gameplay in and of itself. They wanted players to explore and even walk outside levels.
  • Toys For Bob created something called “spyroscope” to help with development, sat on top of emulation of game and extracted field geometry and data. Spyroscope allowed them to extract texture meshes and more polygons = more storytelling, concept artists painted over original maps.
  • The ability to toggle between the original and new soundtrack has been confirmed.
  • Nestor's model from what we've seen in the Reignited Trilogy has been updated.
  • Stephan Vankov, the music composer for Reignited, remastered the music and went to Stewart Copeland’s studio to work on it. A lot of the music have the original samples and melodies.
