In 2017, First 4 Figures ran a community poll in their Facebook Group for fans of The Legend of Spyro reboot if they wanted resin statues of DOTD Spyro and Cynder. The poll reached over 800+ yes votes, prompting First4Figures to reach out to Activision for approval. During the process, First 4 Figures did 3D meshes of what the Legend of Spyro statues would look like; one version even had the concept of adding the snake chains as an additional accessory for an Exclusive Edition.
As the Spyro Reignited Trilogy was announced in 2018, Activision had requested First 4 Figures to instead focus on making Reignited Spyro merchandise to not confuse the current marketplace that is hyped by the anouncement of Reignited. At the time, the DOTD statues had reached the third stage of statue development and were put on hold as requested. Classic Spyro and Reignited Spyro merchandise from First 4 Figures and other companies were released as the Reignited Trilogy hit store shelves.
Months after the Reignited Trilogy, Activision had approved merchandise from First 4 Figures and other companies based on both classic Spyro and Reignited Spyro, the latter which is the current focus and rendition of the character in the franchise. Classic Spyro from the original Spyro trilogy is also the original version of Spyro that Reignited is based on, which is why it can go in hand-in-hand in merch.
First 4 Figures ran another poll in 2019 if their community of LOS fans still wanted the DOTD statues, which many voted 'yes'. But Activision didn't approve the statues. In 2023, First 4 Figures attempted to gain support in pushing for continued development on the DOTD resin statues. Once again, Activision has yet to once again approve them despite the new votes.
Starting in 2025, Activision greenlit Youtooz in making merchandise for the dormant Skylanders franchise when the fanbase requested Youtooz to make new content to buy.
Activision appears to actively refuse requests of Legend Spyro merchandise being made on the belief that their consumers will be confused by two versions of Spyro existing in the wild. But they seem to forget the fact that a sizeable fanbase of the Legend reboot exists that is willing to buy merchandise of characters related to Legend trilogy. And as mentioned above, Activision has started allowing merchandise on the Skylanders franchise, which is one of their biggest game IPs they own and features a different take on Spyro and other related characters. This makes their decision confusing, giving off the impression that Activision is only going for the versions of the Spyro character that is more recognizable and popular in the current market.
Which makes one wonder: Is it because The Legend of Spyro series sold less than the classic Spyro games before it? Or is it because Legend Spyro (2006-2008) is no longer the face of the Spyro franchise to make the risk in allowing official merchandise? The answer is currently uncertain, but it does leave Legend fans unsatisfied.
