Spyro fan, redandblack64, has released an update on their fan PlayStation 1 remake of Spyro: Season of Ice. For the Autumn Fairy Home, it replaces the placeholder dragon candles from Bunndragoness' Spyro: Myths Awaken fangame with Season of Ice's trademark collectibles: the frozen fairies. To free these fairies from their icy prisons, simply use Spyro's flame on them and the ice will melt off the fairies, freeing them. Like in the original game, most of the collectible fairies have dialogue upon being freed, but will need to be interacted with in order to see them.
The interactable pumpkins now light up when hit with Spyro's flame. Lighting all pumpkins around the Autumn Fairy Home will give Spyro a frozen fairy that will appear inside one of the castles near Hunter and the forest.
The newly added level, Mermaid Coast, is found closest to the home world's starting point up a ledge. Within, we experience the realm from third person perspective and not the original top-down. Unlike the origianl game, Spyro can swim in the clear water in the bay, which added an interesting a new layer of exploration when collecting gems and killing fodder underwater. But the less transparent waters beyond the coast's barrier will harm Spyro if he jumps or falls into it. The objectives in obtaining the frozen fairies of this level are still the same, though one of the objectives involving the sand castles is done differently.
The residential mermaids have their own models based on their game sprites in the original game and share the same dialogue. One of the mermaids is missing, Steffi, the one who is found at the start of Mermaid Coast and informs Spyro of their plight of the Rhynocs terrorizing the realm. The enemy Rhynocs found here also have their own unique models and rigs. The Rhynoc Sailors follow the tutorial enemy behavior of cowering when Spyro approaches them and make no attempt to attack; they don't run away like their original counterpart. The Rhynoc Captains however are missing their parrots that they use to send at Spyro to attack and instead physical contact with these Rhynocs deal damage to Spyro.
I enjoyed playing through the level and experiencing what changes were done to accommdate the new third person perspsective from the original Season of Ice game. At the moment, the level is still a work in progress along with the current game build. A lot can be added in future updates and improved. And I can't wait for them.
