When the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, fans were disappointed that the baby dragons from the Spyro: Year of the Dragon installment weren't given the same treatment as the adult dragons who were each given individual redesigns for Spyro 1.
Shortly after the release of the Reignited Trilogy, Spyro fan Nicooriia began doing a fan series on her take on the baby dragons from Spyro: Year of the Dragon. The challenge lasted about 3 years, and years later I decided to reach out to Nicooriia to ask some questions about her series.
Question 1: What made you want to do this challenge? Was it because the baby dragons weren't given the redesign treatment like the adult dragons from Spyro 1 in Reignited?
Nicooriia: Oh, I was just really inspired by the adult dragons and the art of the reignited games! I would've liked to have seen the babies getting redesigns as well, but I understand that a lot of work would've gone for 150+1 characters that have at most 5 seconds of animation. Compared to the elders, all of which have dialogue and interactions with Spyro. Buuuut I figured "Why not go wild with the little guys too?"
Question #2: I can tell redesigning all 150 baby dragons with individual personalities was a long process. It’s slightly over 2x more than the number of dragons we saved in Spyro 1. Did you think you were up for the challenge?
Nicooriia: I definitely knew it would be quite a challenge, but didn't expect it to take as long as it did! I wasn't sure I was going to finish it at all, but I was committed to it. Especially after I got so much feedback and encouragement, I wanted to see it through! Certainly the biggest project I've taken on.
Question #3: Are each set of dragons based on the worlds they’re found and hatched in?
Nicooriia: Some of them took an hour or more, depending on any research I had to do in-game or otherwise, how complex I wanted a design to be, and what poses I wanted them to have to display their personalities.
Question #4: Which ones are your favorite out of the bunch? :)
Nicooriia: Oof, it's hard to pick! Yin and Yang, and George hold a special place in my heart as the babies rescued at the end, as well as being the end of my project. They carry that unreal, bittersweet feeling that it was finally over and I would miss the journey. I also had a lot of fun with Ba'ah, as I remember the community missing the original animation of the little guy popping out of a sheep costume, likely scrapped from the remake due to limitations and time constraints. If I listed every dragon that meant something to me or signified a milestone, I'd be here all day! But some other of my favorites design-wise are Hannah, Caroline, Modesty, and Grayson;
